A 10-minute combination comedy, cooking and travelogue show to be shown on KLM international flights. Each show features prominent tourist attractions of the destination country, a comic-cooking segment showing the preparation of the meal and a special guest appearance from a celebrity who taste-tests the dish before being served to the passengers.
Why AIR-MEALS???
The in-flight meal, considered by most travelers to be a much-maligned aspect of flying, now can whet the appetite of passengers waiting for their meals to be served as well as being entertained and informed about the country that they’re traveling to.
Here’s how it works. Let’s take the destination Amsterdam, for this example.
Music & Opening Titles:
Close-ups of mounds of mashed potatoes, evolving, via computer general effect, into snow covered mountains. A KLM 747 is seen in the distance coming around a mountain. As it flies towards the viewer, a chef’s hat appears on top of the nose of the plane. Titles fade up into “AIR-MEALS, KLM Style”.
The host chef sits in a cramped kitchen in an airplane style motif set in the studio. Stewardesses, crew and “lost” passengers stroll in and out of set. The host introduces the in-flight menu and their destination’s special cuisine, “the cheese platter”, which will also be served on today’s flight. The only problem being that someone forgot to order the cheese. But “not to worry”…. He already has an assistant on the ground looking for “the best cheese in Holland” and “as soon as he finds it, he’ll bring it right up!”
Here’s where we cut to the travelogue part of the show!
The assistant takes us through an abbreviated comic version of how cheese is made, from to cow to factory. With his supply of “Dutch Cuisine” in hand, he heads for the plane by bicycle, boat, roller skates and car. Passing through farmlands bedecked with windmills, over dykes, through the cities with major tourist sights and markets stocked with beautiful flowers, the assistant miraculously appears in the chef’s kitchen and presents him with the cheese.
Back in the 747’s kitchen.
As the chef prepares the cheese platter, a “famous Dutch celebrity” walks in ‘unexpectedly’. While he/she is there, the chef offers him/her a taste of the cuisine and the celebrity gets a chance to plug an upcoming project. Satisfied that the meal is ready, the chef turns to the camera and proclaims, “dinner is served”.
Goals:
To promote all KLM destinations and attractions at those destinations.
To promote in-flight meals (each meal has an ingredient indigenous to the destination.
To raise awareness of meals available on KLM and to effectively combine the in-flight meal with the destination.
