Opening shot is interior of a tattered office and four people lounging around, obviously bored. Through dialogue, they introduce themselves as a secretary, mail boy and two assistant talent scouts. They present a story line about a three-month-old actors’ strike that’s paralyzed the entertainment field. Two head scouts enter the office. They’ve been on a shoplifting spree and present the staff their wages in the form of stolen goods. A sandwich man comes into the office and warns them that their landlord is in the building collecting rent. Before they can react to the news, the landlord and two large bodyguards enter the office and threaten to harm the scouts if the overdue rent isn’t paid in one week. The scouts realize the importance of clearing the matter up as soon as possible and that the only way they can get money is to find work for non-union talent.
We follow them looking for non-union talent, through various scenes of bars, streets, weddings, clubs, bar mitzvahs and other assorted venues, observing various theater and music groups.
They disappointingly return to the office and begin to ponder their fate, when out of the blue, they’re given a tip by the sandwich man, about his wife’s relatives, a group of Romanian acrobats coming for a visit. The scouts go into action immediately and arrange a performance for the troupe, which agree to perform, only if sleeping accommodations can be found.
Scene changes to the lobby of a luxurious hotel, where the acrobats juggle assorted objects belonging to the hotel. After an outrageous scene with the hotel staff that is hell-bent in getting them out of the hotel, they walk out and agree to have the acrobats stay with one of the assistant scout’s brother.
Cut to the interior of a large circus tent on performance night. Backstage the scouts pace the floor, waiting for the arrival of the acrobats. A phone call explains to them that the acrobats left the apartment to go on drinking and raving spree and now they can’t be found.
The scene shifts to onstage and the emcee’s introduction of the acrobats. The scouts appear in circus garb and perform an acrobatic routine. Cutting back to the office. The scouts are laughing and recounting their circus experience. They read in the newspaper that the actor’s strike has ended. A knock is heard at the door and performers of all kinds auditioning at the same time suddenly deluge them
